The communication network is defended using a distributed infrastructure that exercises coordination across distributed abstract levels. At each node computing device including the communication network, detects at least one node event that occurs at the machine code level using the stored event list and is known to have the potential to directly interfere with the internal operation of the node computing device . In response to detecting the at least one node event at one of the plurality of network nodes, the optimal network level defense action is automatically and selectively determined by the network. The network level defense function includes a plurality of network nodes including the communication network.
