DEVICE PROVIDING ENLARGEMENT PREVENTING COLLAPSE OF THE PUPIL OF THE EYE

An apparatus for providing an enlargement of the pupil of an eye during an ophthalmic surgical procedure and also preventing its reduction. The device, which is configured as a continuous or discontinuous ring, includes a plurality of notches at the corners and flanges at the sides. The ring is formed of strands of elastically flexible material and is disposed entirely within a single plane. The notches engage the pupil edges at different portions and push them in the direction of retraction, thereby causing continuous pupil dilation. In addition, the device causes bending of the pupil edge and iris at the notches and above and below the flanges, thereby resulting in a firm coupling. The enlargement of the pupil created by the ring enables a wide view of the structure deeper than the pupil plane, which was previously difficult to see due to the small pupil.
