The invention relates to a locking device (10) for sliding plug doors of vehicles, in particular vehicles for public passenger transport, comprising at least one door leaf able to slide in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle and a drive (50) for moving the door leaf between a closed and an open position, wherein the locking device (10) comprises a rod (20; 30; 40) that can be brought into an over-dead-centre position for locking the door in the closed position. The invention is characterised in that the locking device (10) comprises a base plate (11) on which a locking plate (20) and a bell crank (40) are rotatably mounted in respective bearings (13; 14) in a plane parallel to the plane of the base plate. The bell crank (40) and the locking plate (20) are hinged to one another via a locking lever (30) mounted on the bell crank and locking plate, wherein the bell crank (40), the locking lever (30) and the locking plate (20) can be brought by articulating the locking lever (30) into a position in which the connecting line (VV) is between the bearing (13) of the bell crank (40) and the joint (32) between the locking lever (30) and the locking plate (20) and the connecting line (VU) is between the bearing (13) of the bell crank (40) and the joint (31) between the bell crank (40) and the locking lever (30) in the over-dead-centre position. The over-dead-centre position can be released by an opposing articulation of the locking lever (30), wherein the locking plate (20), the bell crank (40) and the locking lever (30) are arranged on the same side of the base plate (11).
