FIELD: chemistry.;SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a process for producing high molecular weight polyvinylpyrrolidone and a copolymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone and N-vinylimidazole by radiation polymerization of an aqueous solution of N-vinylpyrrolidone or an aqueous solution of N-vinylpyrrolidone in a mixture with N-vinylimidazole at a predetermined pH range. Moreover, radiation polymerization of an aqueous solution of N-vinylpyrrolidone is carried out at its concentration in an aqueous solution of 9–11 % or radiation polymerization of an aqueous solution of N-vinylpyrrolidone in a mixture with N-vinylimidazole at a weight ratio of 1.00:0.85, respectively, and a total concentration of 9–11 % by weight, when adjusting the pH in the range of 7.5–8.5 by the introduction of an aqueous solution of potassium salt of pyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid and a total radiation dose of 1.4–2.7 kGy. Technical result is the preparation of homogeneous aqueous solutions of high-molecular polyvinylpyrrolidone and a copolymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone and N-vinylimidazole with a Brookfield viscosity of 85–200 Pz and a weight average molecular weight of 2.9–4.5 MDa.;EFFECT: obtaining homogeneous aqueous solutions of high molecular weight polyvinylpyrrolidone and a copolymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone and N-vinylimidazole.;1 cl, 2 tbl, 6 ex
