A process for producing surface-hydrophilized metal oxide nanoparticles comprising the following steps: a. Activation of hydrophobic metal oxide nanoparticles containing at least one metal oxide of a metal selected from the iron-platinum group of the Periodic Table of the Elements, and a coordinatively bound ligand shell, in an organic solvent, by adding an organophilic base comprising a strong base and a phase transfer agent, b. Addition of an active C-alkane having a functionality and a leaving group, whereby a covalent attachment of the alkane to the metal oxide nanoparticles takes place, so that a precipitate precipitates, c. Separation of the precipitate and conversion into an aqueous solution, characterized in that the covalent bonding in (b) via a carbon atom of the C-alkyl group of the active C-alkane on the nanoparticles own, occupying the surface lattice sites of the metal oxide nanoparticles, oxygen occurs.
