The illumination device according to the invention for an aircraft comprises a carrier module, a planar light guide fastened to the carrier module with a plurality of outcoupling points and a plurality of light sources for illuminating the light guide. The planar light guide is covered with a translucent haptic layer, which is fastened on a visible side of the light guide, which in turn is covered by a decorative layer. As an additional lighting element, the lighting device comprises a strand-shaped light guide, which has its own light source and is connected to the decorative layer via a holding device. This results in a flat arrangement that can be easily integrated into interior parts and at the same time allows for large-area illumination. In this case, additional light effects can be integrated by means of the strand-shaped light guide. By the illumination device is covered by the decorative layer, the illumination device remains invisible when switched off.
