The invention relates to a stereo camera device (2) for monitoring the surroundings of a motor vehicle (1). Said device comprises a first camera (3) and a second camera (4), the first and the second camera (3, 4) each capturing an image that covers differently sized areas of monitoring (α1, α1), and an analysis unit (5).
