An improved electrosurgical hand instrument comprises a housing, an electrosurgical electrode, which is connected to a distal end of the housing and extends from a distal end thereof in a first direction, at least one light source which is supported with the housing for radiating light in the first connected to the first direction, and a light tunnel member extending from the distal end of the housing in the first direction and a light tunnel therethrough for receiving and controlling light, which is emitted by the light source (s), through the light tunnel and from a Defined distal end of the light tunnel element addition. The light tunnel element provides improved illumination of tissue sites. The electrosurgical electrode may extend through and beyond the distal end of the light tunneling member, the light tunnel extending along at least a major portion of a length of the electrosurgical electrode extending distally of the housing. The light tunnel may include an open passageway extending proximally from the distal end of the light tunneling member for use in removing smoke from a tissue site. The electrosurgical hand instrument may include a smoke removal passage fluidly connected to and extending proximally from the open passage of the light tunnel, wherein smoke may be drawn into a distal end of the open passageway and through the open passageway and the smoke removal passageway for improved tissue site readability to give an improved working environment. The smoke removal passage may be defined by a tubular member which abuts the light tunneling member for handling as a single unit.
