Virtual DNS record update procedure for dynamically changing the IP address of an in-vehicle server

A system includes a vehicle modem; a memory storing data on coupled devices, including mobile device telephone numbers; and a web server installed on a telematics control unit connected to a bus of a vehicle. The web server detects a change in a network address of the vehicle modem and in response sends the changed network address to the mobile devices using short message service (SMS) addressed to the phone numbers of the mobile devices. A mobile device recognizes that a web request contains a host name of a vehicle; accesses a virtual domain name server of the device to determine whether the mobile device locally stores a network address for the host name; if so, make a web connection to the network address, and if not, make the web connection using a network address resolved from the host name via a remote Domain Name Server.
