A system and method for controlling use of on-vehicle WLAN hotspots by a portable wireless device, comprising: detecting whether the portable wireless device is communicating via a WLAN hotspot; determining, at the portable wireless device, whether the WLAN hotspot is being provided by a vehicle; and enabling one or more standard prohibitions against transmitting low priority data from the portable wireless device via a mobile wireless carrier system while the portable wireless device is communicating with the WLAN hotspot provided by the vehicle.
