A position detecting device includes a frame, a guide bearing, a moving member, a position sensitive detector, a light source, and a position indication emitter. The moving element is guided by the guide bearing over a measuring range along a measuring axis direction. The light source is designed to emit source light. The position indication emitter moves with the moving element. The position indication emitter includes an emitter material that absorbs source light and outputs excitation light from the emitter material to form a measurement point on the position sensitive detector. The measuring point moves along the detection axis direction of the position sensitive detector corresponding to the position of the moving member along the measuring axis direction. The position sensitive detector outputs at least one signal in response to the measuring point indicative of the position of the moving element along the measuring axis direction.
