An optical imaging system for imaging a target subject during a medical procedure comprising: an optical assembly with movable zoom optics and movable focus optics; a zoom actuator for positioning the zoom optics; a focus actuator for positioning the focus optics; a controller for controlling in response to the received control input the zoom actuator and the focus actuator; anda camera for capturing an image of the target subject from the optical assembly; wherein the zoom optics and the focus optics are independently movable by the controller using the zoom actuator and the focus actuator, respectively; and wherein the optical imaging system is configured to operate at a minimum working distance from the target subject, wherein the minimum working distance between an aperture of the optical assembly and the target subject is defined.
