The invention relates to a method for estimating a volume of a reducing agent in liquid form (21) in a container (7) of a selective catalytic reduction system, the reducing agent being at least partially frozen (20), wherein temperature measurements are carried out at regular intervals in the container (7) and the reducing agent is heated as soon as an initial temperature measurement is indicative of a reducing agent that is at least partially frozen (20), the heating being sequentially stopped and resumed, and the rates of lowering and raising the temperatures measured when the heating is stopped and resumed, respectively, being correlated to the volume of reducing agent in liquid form (21) in the container (7), enabling an estimation of said volume to be carried out.
