The invention relates to novel neutral or cationic ligand / metal ion complexes formed of a metal ion selected from transition or post-transition metals, with the exception of Ln3 + lanthanide ions, and a ligand responding to one or more of the following formulas: with n, R2, R4, R1 and R1 ', as defined in claim 1, and their salts with an anion when the complex is cationic, solvates and hydrates. The invention also relates to the use of such a complex as an aid to the crystallization of a biological macromolecule as well as crystals derived from a biological macromolecule comprising such a complex.
