A dual mode cane or stick 105 for blind or visually impaired includes a tip 101. The tip 101 includes a low-friction surface 102 that contacts a walking surface when the tip 101 rests on the walking surface at an angle less than or equal to a transition angle. The tip 101 includes a high friction surface 104 that contacts the walking surface when the tip rests on the walking surface at an angle greater than or equal to the transition angle to the low friction tip. This enables the cane 105 to be used as a searching cane at an angle below the transitional angle and as non slip support when the angle is above the transitional angle.
