An improved system and method for event-based profiling of web traffic

Baseline traffic to an internet resource such as a webpage is calculated and traffic to the resource is determined for a predetermined period following an event eg a televised commercial. A response profile is established and matched to a dictionary of historical response profiles to discriminate between a response to the advert and baseline and/or sporadic internet traffic. The baseline may be identified by applying a statistical algorithm using a moving median window. Matching may be performed by a sparse coding engine. Historical response profiles may be functions of channel, time of day, day of the week or time of year of showing the advert. Response profiles for events happening within a predetermined time period may be merged.
