Method of, and apparatus for, creating reference data items for an automated test of software with a graphical user interface

A test system uses a test script to test a computer program with a graphical user interface executing on a computer system under test. The test script includes user actions to be carried out on the test system and corresponding images of the interface. To update a test description, all or part of the graphical user interface of the system under test is obtained. Correlations of the pixels of the interface are identified to determine image boundaries of interface objects in the interface. The correlations may be the colour of adjacent pixels or the changing of adjacent pixels over time. The adjacent pixels may form a shape, such as a line, a rectangle or a circle. A reference image, which represents the object is then generated and stored in a database. User inputs indicating the selection of an interface object associated with a reference image are received. A test description is updated with the reference image indicating the selected object.
