An apparatus comprises a predetermined shape, and: · at least three microphones 301, 303, 305, located on or within the apparatus, wherein at least one pair from the at least three microphones comprises two microphones 301, 303 which are separated by a shorter distance C of the predetermined shape than at least one other microphone pair 303, 305 of the predetermined shape; and a processor (fig 6) configured to: receive at least three microphone audio signals from the at least three microphones; · analyse at least the microphone audio signals from the two microphones 301, 303 which are separated by the shorter distance C to determine a directional ambiguity decision;  and analyse the microphone audio signals from the other microphone pair 303, 305 separated by a longer distance B to determine at least one other sound characteristic.
