Test device for and method of testing interoperability of railway vehicles

A device 1, for testing interoperability of vehicles that are intended to be part of a railway train, comprises a data and processing control unit (DPU) which outputs communication signals 17 to the railway vehicle under test 30 and processes communication signals 17 received from that vehicle, thereby simulating a communication behaviour according to a functionality of a simulated railway vehicle communicatively coupled to that vehicle. A user interface outputs test results and/or enables a user to control testing. The DPU may evaluate the received communication signals to determine whether the vehicle under test is correctly functioning within a railway train. The test device may store data enabling the DPU to simulate different types of vehicles that may be coupled to the vehicle under test. The communicative connection of the test device may be identical to that of a real railway vehicle, but the mechanical coupling might not be identical.
