The system includes a shopping list management engine 108 for providing a suggested shopping list comprising the items required for the selected recipes and meal plans which are available at a retailer. The shopping list management engine stores a customer purchase history to inform if items in the suggested shopping list have been previously purchased, preferably to identify suggested items which have been recently purchased. Nutritional requirements may be dietary, food allergy or goal-related. Preferably, customers can mark certain recipes as private so that they are not cross-suggested. The system may suggest substitute items which do not contain an undesirable ingredient. Customer feedback on recipes and meal plans may be solicited to aid cross-suggestion.
