Method of retrofitting smoke extractor system to a building

Retrofittable a smoke extractor system 12 as part of a multi-storey building 14 having a lift shaft. Providing a mechanical ventilation device 18 to extract smoke at the top of the lift shaft. A smoke access path on each storey 16 couples each storey 16 to the lift shaft. The smoke access path can be a vent 10 with a controlled damper, only opening when smoke is detected, or can be the elevator doors. The lift shaft can be pressurised with gaps around elevator doors being sealed. Adjacent stairwells 70 can be used to provide an influx of airflow to remove smoke and circulate fresh air. Lift can be moved to bottom of lift shaft during fire.
