The invention relates to a drilling device and a method for producing a drill hole in the ground, comprising: an auger (22), which can be rotationally driven and which has at least one drill flighting (24), which runs along a central hollow pipe (26); a drill pipe (30) which can be rotationally driven independently of the auger (22), and which at least partially surrounds the auger (22); and a rotating base (40) which is rotationally arranged on a lower region of the auger (22), and which can be adjusted between a drilling position in which a passage (29) is opened to the drill flighting (24) for ground material, and a closed position in which the passage (29) is closed. According to the invention: in order to adjust the rotating base (40), the auger (22) and the drill pipe (30) can be adjusted axially in relation to one another between a first stroke position and a second stroke position; in the first stroke position, the rotating base (40) is arranged in the drilling position with an open passage (29); in the second stroke position, the rotating base (40) is arranged in the closed position thereof with a closed passage (29); and a controller is provided and configured, which indicates to a device user whether the auger (22) is in the first or the second stroke position and/or the rotating base (40) is in the closed position.
