A method and apparatus are provided. The method includes the steps ofproviding a web or social networking account within a chat server for adigital videorecorder (DVR) of a security system, the DVR receiving a chat message from aperson through the chat server and the DVR automatically executing apredetermined instruction corresponding to a content of the received chatmessage.
