A method of operating a hydraulic motor including: a rotor shaft; a cylinder; a piston forming a working chamber together with the cylinder; and at least one high-pressure valve and at least one low-pressure valve configured to switch a communication state between the working chamber and a high-pressure line and between the working chamber and a low-pressure line, respectively, in connection with reciprocating motion of the piston, includes: a step of detecting an abnormality of the hydraulic motor; and a stop step of stopping the hydraulic motor if the abnormality is detected. The stop step includes: maintaining a pressure of the high-pressure line to be within a predetermined range of not greater than an upper limit value Pmax which is smaller than a rated pressure of the high-pressure line and not less than a lower limit value Pmin which is greater than zero at least until a rotation speed of the rotor shaft decreases to a predetermined rotation speed which is lower than a rated rotation speed.
