A method for sideways movement of an earth working machine (10), wherein the earth working machine (10) comprises a machine frame (12) which has at least one front running mechanism (18) and at least one rear running mechanism (20) standing on a support surface (A) of a subsoil (U). The running mechanisms (18, 20) are adapted to roll on the substrate (U) in a running direction (D), wherein the running mechanisms (18, 20) relative to the machine frame (12) rotate around a steering axis (S) allocated to the running mechanisms (18, 20). It is characterized in that the lateral movement according to the invention takes place in a sideways direction (V) which is different from the travelling direction of the earth working machine (10) determined by a respective steering angle. The method comprises the following steps: inclining the running mechanisms (18, 20) relative to the support surface (A) around an inclined axis (N), moving the running mechanisms (18, 20) away from a virtual intersection point (P) around a swing point (C) swinging relative to the substrate (U) of the steering axis (S), wherein the intersection point is located on an imaginary steering axis (S) extending towards the subsoil (U), and the inclined axis forms right angles with the steering axis (S) and the travel direction (D) of the running mechanisms (18, 20), rotating the inclined running mechanisms (18, 20) around the steering axis (S) relative to the machine frame (12), and swinging the running mechanisms (18, 20) relative to the subsoil (U) around the intersection point (P) away from the swing point (C).
