The method comprises the following steps: inclining the running mechanisms (18, 20) relative to the support surface (A) around an inclined axis (N), moving the running mechanisms (18, 20) away from a virtual intersection point (P) around a swing point (C) swinging relative to the substrate (U) of the steering axis (S), wherein the intersection point is located on an imaginary steering axis (S) extending towards the subsoil (U), and the inclined axis forms right angles with the steering axis (S) and the travel direction (D) of the running mechanisms (18, 20), rotating the inclined running mechanisms (18, 20) around the steering axis (S) relative to the machine frame (12), and swinging the running mechanisms (18, 20) relative to the subsoil (U) around the intersection point (P) away from the swing point (C).
