The present invention provides a method to automatically configure parameters used to operate a new cell belonging to a network of cells in an optimized manner, using a radio environment map. As the density of cells deployed in a radio network increases, configuration of cells becomes more and more complex and therefore difficult to achieve manually. Some radio parameters used during cell operation can be configured automatically, upon installation, or reconfigured during operation. In order to properly configure a cell, it is necessary to know the deployment of surrounding cells. For example, the value of the PCI (Physical Cell Identifier) configured at two cells whose radio coverage is overlapping should be different in order to avoid PCI collisions. Similarly, the RACH Root Sequence configured at two cells whose radio coverage is overlapping should be different in order to minimize inter-cell RACH interference. The present invention provides a method to automatically configure radio parameters used to operate a cell belonging to a network of cells in an optimized manner, using a radio environment map.
