A physically unclonable function is a function that identifies a device by means of the device's intrinsic random features. A diffractive filter array is a device designed for colour imaging, whose design depends up9on a random microstructure within the diffractive part of the receiver. The invention uses a diffractive filter array as a physically unclonable function within a visible light communication network, so as to authenticate the individual nodes in the network and detect tampering within the individual nodes and communication links. That information is exchanged across the network, so that the network reaches a consensus decision about which nodes and links are to be trusted, and the network uses that information for communication and routing.
