A process for treating wastewater or sewage comprising:receiving a wastewater inflow or a sewage inflow in a first reactor (100A);receiving an outflow from the first reactor (100A) to one or more second reactors;receiving an outflow from the one or more second reactors in a nitritation reactor (100B);receiving an overflow (230) of partially treated wastewater or partially treated sewage from the nitritation reactor (100B) in an anammox reactor (110);receiving a bypass flow from the first reactor (100A) and/or the one or more second reactors in the anammox reactor (110);receiving a mixed liquor flow from the anammox reactor (110) into one or more clarifiers (120A, 120B), wherein if there are more than one clarifiers, the clarifiers are connected in parallel;providing a first return activated sludge flow from the clarifier (120A, 120B) to the first reactor;providing a second return activated sludge from the clarifier (120A, 120B) to the nitritation reactor (100B);providing a third return activated sludge flow from the clarifier (120A, 120B) to the anammox reactor (110); and,optionally blending the overflow from the nitritation reactor (100B) and the bypass flow from the first flow reactor (100A) in the anammox reactor (110),wherein the first reactor (100A) and the one or more second flow equalization reactors are each separated by a partition wall (180), andwherein the partition wall(s) comprise one or more openings providing fluid communication therethrough.
