To provide novel methods for identifying biomarker genes for evaluating the competence of a mammalian oocyte in giving rise to a normal pregnancy after fertilization.SOLUTION: Provided is a method comprising: a) recovering oocytes having cumulus and/or granulosa cells; b) measuring at least two exon level gene expression selected from the group consisting of CAMK1D exon 1, CAMK1D exon 9, EFNB2, and SASH1, in the cumulus and/or granulosa cells derived from the oocyte; and c) evaluating the competence of the oocyte to deliver parturition, provide implantation, form a pre-implantation blastocyst or embryo, and/or provide fertilization, based on the expression level in the cumulus and/or granulosa cells.SELECTED DRAWING: None
