To provide a resin capable of improving strength of an artificial wood.SOLUTION: There is provided a phenol resin for manufacturing an artificial wood, having a phenol structure unit substituted by a group represented by -CH-O-R, wherein R represents an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms. The phenol resin for manufacturing the artificial wood preferably has further a structural unit containing a dimethylene ether structure. A value of M/(M+M) is preferably 0.3 or more, wherein a molar amount of the group represented by -CH-O-R (definition of R is as above) in the phenol resin for manufacturing the artificial wood is M, a molar amount of a hydroxymethyl group in the phenol resin is M. An artificial wood good in strength can be obtained by mixing and molding the phenol resin for manufacturing the artificial wood, a wood powder, a thermoplastic resin, a compatibility accelerator or the like.SELECTED DRAWING: None
