To make it possible to provide map information exceeding a range pre-held by a map information providing device even under an environment in which connection to a mobile communication network is difficult or impossible.SOLUTION: A map information providing system S includes: a map server 3 which is an external device holding first map information having a relatively wide map range; a portable map transmission device 2 for downloading third map information in a range equal to or smaller than the first map information from the map server 3 and holding it in its own device; and a list terminal 1 which is a map information providing device for providing a user with map information on the basis of second map information held by its own terminal. When the list terminal 1 is requested to display a map exceeding a map range of the second map information held by its own device, it obtains map information of the map range corresponding to the request by short-range wireless from the portable map transmission device 2 without going through the mobile communication network to update the map information in its own terminal, and makes a map display to the user on the basis of the updated map information.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
