Disclosed are systems and methods that attempt to improve spectral efficiency by using faster than Nyquist (FTN) transmission. In one embodiment, the method at the transmitter comprises: dividing bits into K bit streams; obtaining power scaled K symbol streams; and power scaled said K symbol streams. Combining to obtain a stream of transmission symbols, and transmitting the stream of transmission symbols using FTN signaling. At the receiver, the received symbols are divided into K symbol streams and (i) demodulation and decoding of the K th symbol stream of the K symbol streams to obtain the K th bit set (ii ) Mapping the Kth bit set to the Kth symbol set, and (iii) for each of k = K−1,. Demodulation and decoding are performed by decoding to obtain the kth bit set. Demodulation and decoding involves performing interference cancellation.
