To provide a method for producing magnesium aluminate spinel having excellent optical and mechanical characteristics.SOLUTION: Magnesium aluminate spinel is produced by hydrothermally aging an aqueous slurry of a spinel precursor in which the spinel precursor can be (a) a mixture of boehmite alumina and a magnesium precursor, (b) an aluminium magnesium oxide or hydroxide and (c) mixtures thereof; drying at least one of the aged slurries to remove water and produce at least one kind of dried spinel precursor; and then calcining the dried spinel precursor.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
