Sounding Reference Signal (SRS) Design for Cellular Time Division Duplex (TDD) Millimeter Wave Systems

A system and method for communicating a sounding reference signal (SRS) in a cellular time division duplex (TDD) millimeter wave system. A transmission point (TP) may transmit a beamformed reference signal to user equipment (UE), and each of the beamformed reference signals has a beam direction available for TP. It is transmitted according to the beam direction in the set. The TP may receive a feedback message identifying one or more of the beamformed reference signals transmitted to the UE from the UE. The TP selects a subset of beam directions for SRS reception based on a feedback message received from the UE from a set of beam directions available for the TP, and uplink SRS according to the beam directions in the subset of beam directions. A signal may be received. The set of beam directions available for TP includes at least one beam direction that is excluded from the subset of beam directions.
