The port opening edge shape for the port in the cylinder of the opposed piston combustion engine is optimized for the flow region as well as for minimizing piston ring clipping. The port opening edge shape includes an upper edge, a lower edge, first and second side edges connecting the upper edge and the lower edge, and a vertex within the upper edge. The apex has a minimum radius of curvature of the port opening edge shape. The spline that defines the port opening edge shape can be calculated based on the maximum height, full width, amount or degree of skew, and minimum radius of curvature.
