PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve recognition accuracy of the serial number of a paper sheet.SOLUTION: A serial number recognition device includes: a light receiving element array for receiving reflected light that is the light of a first light source reflected by a paper sheet and transmitted light that is the light of a second light source made to transmit the paper sheet to output image data; a light source drive control unit for making the first light source and the second light source radiate light alternately; an interpolation unit for generating a composite image in which a reflection image by the reflected light and a transmission image by the transmitted light are interpolated with each other; and a character recognition unit for performing character recognition the serial number recognition area of the paper sheet relative to the composite image.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
