System and method for supporting router SMA abstraction for SMP connectivity check across virtual router ports in high performance computing environments

Systems and methods are provided for supporting SMP connectivity checks across virtual routers in high performance computing environments. According to one embodiment, the SMA model extension allows for the possibility of sending packets addressed to the local router port (ie, SMP). The SMA to which the packet is addressed can receive the packet and apply new attributes that define that the requested information is on a remote node (eg, connected by a physical link across the subnet). According to one embodiment, the SMA may act as a proxy (receive SMP and send another request), or the SMA may modify the original packet and send it as an inter-subnet packet.
