To provide systems and methods for mitigating transient events in a power generation system.SOLUTION: A power generation system 100 can include an exciter 130 coupled to an alternating current (AC) generator 125 that provides electric power to power lines 105. The transient event mitigating system can include an automatic voltage regulator 140 that detects a transient event in one or more of the power lines 105 and configures a power converter 145 to respond to the transient event by increasing a direct current (DC) voltage coupled to the power converter 145. The power converter 145 can provide the increased DC voltage to an exciter coil of the exciter 130 for a transitory period of time in order to adjust the electric power generated by the AC generator 125 and mitigate adverse effects of the transient event.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
