The purpose of the present invention is to provide a tackifier resin and a pressure sensitive adhesive composition which, despite containing a rosin ester, have low odor and light color. The present invention pertains to a tackifier resin that includes a rosin ester composition, wherein the rosin ester composition contains at least 0.3 wt% but less than 3 wt% of a compound (a) having a bis(hydroxyphenyl)sulfide structure represented by formula (1), 0.3 wt% or more of a phosphorus acid triester (b) represented by formula (2) (where R1, R2, and R3 may be the same or different, and represent C10 or greater substituent groups having carbon and hydrogen, or substituent groups having carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and phosphorus; however, in no event do R1, R2, and R3 bond to one another and form a ring structure), and 0.2 wt% or more of a phenol compound (c) having a tert-butyl group at the ortho position, and weight-average molecular weight of 600 or lower, the degraded rosin content included in the rosin ester composition being 1.6 wt% or less.
