Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is used to measure parameters such as pH of muscle tissue of a patient that is affected by a cardiac arrest. Analysis of the pH and other parameters such as SmO2 facilitates distinguishing between an arrhythmia arrest and an asphyxia arrest.
