A method of adding annotation to digital content and non-transient computer readable media containing software for performing the same invention provides a system and method for collaborative annotation of digital content. According to one embodiment of the present invention, a method of adding notes to digital content is provided. An annotation related to a portion of a digital content volume is created. Annotation is stored in computer-readable memory in a mode that maintains a logical connection between the annotation and the volume portion of digital content. The note is created by a first user. A comment is created by a second user in response to the annotation. The comment is stored in computer readable memory in a mode that maintains a logical connection between the comment and the annotation. The volume portion of the digital content is displayed along with at least one annotation tag and at least one comment tag.
