The present invention provides a nested-pcr / rflp method that allows identification of plasmodium simium infection by differentiating it from plasmodium vivax and other plasmodium species. To this end, primers were used to amplify particular regions of the parasite genome. The presence of plasmodium simium in a sample is performed by detection methods appropriate to the pcr methodology employed.
