Embodiments of the disclosure relate to systems and methods for determining a fault location in a series compensated three-phase power transmission line system using symmetric component-based formulas describing various voltage and current ratios. Voltage and current ratios can be derived using a synchronous measurement procedure that is performed simultaneously on one sender end and one receiver end of the first series compensation power transmission line system. furthermore, determining the fault location according to certain embodiments of the disclosure may eliminate one or more of a need to calculate an impedance value of any of the series capacitors or the series capacitor protection elements that are part of of the three-phase series compensation power transmission system, the need to monitor any of the series capacitor protection elements, and the need to measure a voltage drop in any of the series capacitors.
