host cell, method for producing an isolated polypeptide, composition, vaccines, virulence attenuation method of a bacterium, method for determining whether an individual has been exposed to a pathogen and use of the host cell, vaccines or bacterium of the present invention is related to a polypeptide-based toxin that originates from clostridium perfringens. The invention further relates to immunogenic compositions comprising the toxin and methods for vaccinating animals, for example chickens, such that they are less susceptible to clostridial disease. Also disclosed are methods for determining whether an animal has been exposed to the toxin, toxin-encoding polynucleotides, and attenuated bacteria that express a reduced or less active form of the toxin.
