A system for producing a solid particle slurry and production fluid from an underwater well and a method for producing a solid particle slurry and production fluid having a desired feature The present invention relates to a system for producing a solid particle slurry (26) and production fluid (22) from an underwater well comprising: a pump (30) having an inlet (36) and a discharge (38); a bypass line (34) coupling the pump discharge (38) to the pump inlet (36) to divert a portion of the discharge flow (38) from the pump (30); a refrigeration unit (32) disposed in the bypass line (34) and adapted to cool the production fluid (22) within the refrigeration unit to a temperature at which hydrates may precipitate from the production fluid to producing a hydrate particulate slurry (26) and production fluid; a sensor (46) adapted to produce a signal representative of at least one slurry feature (26); and a control system (44) adapted to control flow through the signal-based system representative of at least one sludge feature (26) wherein at least one sludge feature (26) comprises the hydrate particle size; a discharge pressure control valve disposed upstream of the discharge (38) from the pump (30) and the coupling between the bypass line (34) and a recycle valve (42) is disposed on the bypass line (34) to upstream of the refrigeration unit (32) or otherwise the recycle valve (42) is disposed in the bypass line (34) downstream of the refrigeration unit (32).
