A ship propulsion system with an internal combustion engine shall be notified for the propulsion of a ship;where the internal combustion engine includes a combustion chamber for the combustion of a fossil fuel,with an electrolysis chamber for the production of hydrogen and oxygen gas,and with a vacuum pump to absorb hydrogen and oxygen gas from the electrolysis chamber. The ship's propulsion system shall also include an aeration tank in which volatile organic compounds are aerated,in particular methanol or ethanol,as well as a supply line for the channelling of a gas mixture into the combustion chamber,where the gas mixture contains gaseous organic compounds as well as at least part of hydrogen gas and oxygen gas. In addition, a corresponding method for the operation of a ship propulsion system shall be notified.
