A compacting apparatus (1) for compressing waste material. It comprises a filling opening (3), a filling chamber (2), and a compression chamber (4), a compression plunger (7) for compressing the waste material, and a power supply (14) for moving the compression plunger. The compression chamber (4) comprises an arcuate front wall which in the direction of movement of the plunger is circular arc formed. The plunger (7) is connected to a rear wall (6) and the rear wall (6) is pivotally arranged about an axis of rotation (18). The plunger (7) is adapted to be moved on a circle arc and follow the curvatureof the arcuate front wall (5).
