A method for analyzing a rock sample involves segmenting a digital image of the volume corresponding to the rock sample in order to associate the voxels in the digital image of the volume with pore space or solid. A distance transform is applied to each voxel of the pore space. The distance transform assigns the pore space voxel a distance value indicating the distance from the pore space voxel to the solid voxel. Drainage is numerically modeled for the pore space by selecting each distance value assigned to the voxel of the pore space that is larger than a predetermined threshold value in order to represent the radius of the sphere of the non-wetting fluid embedded in the pore space. The center of the sphere is in the voxel of the pore space corresponding to this distance value. A digital image of the volume is subjected to numerical analysis to describe the properties of the substance of the rock sample at saturation with non-wetting fluid, which is obtained by drainage.
