An optical physical unclonable device and method are disclosed, which are based on random excitation and guiding of optical modes through an optical waveguide which contains random defects and/or dirt and/or impurities in its core, and/or in the core-sheath interface and/or in the input and output faces. The high physical complexity of the optical physical unclonable function (o-PUF) and the non-reproducible nature of the random defects make tampering or study of the device by reverse engineering difficult. Configurations of the device enable the provision of a two-token securing scheme which makes it resistant against playback attacks and modelling attacks.
