The present invention relates to a method of producing nanoparticles of a core/shell geometry, which consist of an inner magnetic phase and a coating of an intermediate iron hydroxy-oxide layer and of a multi-layered divalent-trivalent metal double hydroxide with substitution of carbonate ions by sulfate ions and having the formula [χημικός τύπος]. The production is performed in a device of three reactors in series which include the steps of preparing the core, the intermediate layer and the shell in an alkaline, mild acidic and alkaline environment respectively, in the presence of carbonate and sulfate ions. Thereafter, anionic drug compounds are incorporated by ion-exchange in sulfate positions under mild alkaline conditions. The nanoparticles may be applied for remote-controlled guidance and release of considerable amounts of heat and drug substances into an aqueous environment under the influence of a combination of a static and an alternating magnetic field. The efficiency is determined by the magnetic properties of the core, the positive charge density and the ion-exchange capacity of the shell as well as by the coupling of the heating and drug release mechanism.
